Nothing seems quite so fun and natural as running with your dog on a trail. It’s even more special if you can go off-leash. Fortunately, or unfortunately (depending on one’s viewpoint), you and your dog aren’t the only people on that trail. The golden rule tells us we should consider others. And the credo of all nature lovers “leave no trace” tells us to limit our impact on nature.
Dogs are getting stolen more often now. I thought it was strange when recently I saw three stories about the theft of dogs in as many days.
First, it was Lady Gaga.
As you’ve probably already heard, two of her three French Bulldogs were dognapped at gunpoint in LA’s West Hollywood area. Gaga’s dogwalker was shot in the chest during the theft and is currently recovering. Gaga, who was working on a movie in Italy, offered a $500,000 reward for the return of the pups.

This is the second in a continuing series called “Dog Tales”. I know that’s not a very original name – but it’s descriptive. I’m amused by most things dog-related, so this is an attempt to share some of the stories, images, or media that other people might also find interesting.
We all use the same internet. I’m sorry if you’ve already seen any of these. Hopefully at least one of the items will bring a smile to your face. I’ve tried to keep my wording short, with links so you can find out more information if you’re so inclined.
You think you have the blues?
About 230 miles east of Moscow lies a Russian city named Dzerzhink (dʲzʲɪˈrʐɨnsk). Feral dogs with bright blue fur have been seen living in a semi-industrial area there.
As stated in The Moscow Times, the dog’s territory contains an abandoned chemical plant. The shuttered plexiglass factory used substances such as hydrocyanic acid and copper sulfate – both possible sources for the blue coloring in the animals. Unfortunately, exposure to these compounds could also lead to skin problems or worse.
At the time of this writing, most, if not all of the dogs have been captured and taken to the vet for tests and a few have even been adopted.

In 2020, Eliza Reinhardt’s mom told her about the Getty Museum Challenge. It’s a creative challenge that asks people to recreate famous works of art with just what they have on-hand at home.
The challenge is a popular one due to the number of people that are isolating at home, and Eliza wasted no time getting to work. Using her 3-year-old Australian Sheppard as her assistant/model, they’ve recreated many classic and modern masterpieces. She says of Finn, “He’s a working breed, so he has 110% taken these daily photos as his job. He will work so hard and try to do absolutely anything I ask.

Retired Military K-9 wins the lottery
Well… not exactly… but going from sniffing for bombs to life on a beach with your beautiful, blond best friend kind of seems like it.
Bogi, the Belgian Malinois, served honorably with Sgt. Angela Cardone in the Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni, Japan. The pair bonded and Sgt. Cardone was devastated when she was suddenly transferred to Hawaii. They were separated for 18 months. During which time “”It kind of felt like a piece of me was missing,” said Sgt. Cardone.
When she learned that Bogi had suffered a neck injury and was going to be medically retired, Sgt. Cardone reached out to American Humane for help. The American Humane Society flew Bogi from Japan to his well-deserved, forever home in the loving company of Sgt. Cardone.

What’s more fun to watch than a pup eating peanut butter?
“Peanut Butter Puppies” and “Peanut Butter Dogs” are 2 books by photographer Greg Murray of Cleveland, Ohio. They are what they sound like. Super fun portraits of dogs making funny faces as they eat the sticky treat. Personally, I want to see the movie. Motion must make it even better.
Greg is using the project to help fund rescue organizations for dogs that need a home. About 30 animal shelters brought animals for the Puppy project. “I get paid to work with animals for a living. I feel like one of the luckiest people in the world,” Says Murray.
Immediately you’re concerned that your beloved pet may have a tumor – but the odds are that it’s a tick or a sebaceous cyst. You’ll need to get a light and maybe a magnifying glass to investigate this bump further.
Ticks and their removal
If it’s a tick you need to get rid of before it makes your dog sick or it drops off the dog and lays eggs in your house.
Remove ticks with tweezers. Grab the tick by its head as close to the dog’s skin as possible. Pull away from the skin’s surface with steady even pressure. Jerking the tick away is more likely to cause the tick’s mouthparts to break off and remain in your dog’s skin. If this happens, try to remove those parts with the tweezers as best as possible. I just wanted to alert everyone about an important dog food recall. These dog foods are branded for active, high-energy dogs and may have been purchased by members of our “Jog With Your Dogs” community.
Over 70 dogs have died and 80 more have become seriously ill. The products include Sportmix, Pro Pac Originals, Splash, Sportstrail and Nunn Better dry dog and cat foods, all produced by Midwestern Pet Foods in Oklahoma. The products are distributed nationally in retail stores and online.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, “It’s believed that the dogs became ill from eating high levels of a Aflatoxin, a toxin that is produced by mold.”
Aflatoxin is produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on corn and grains. Pets can become ill, die, or sustain liver damage without symptoms. The toxin can still be present even if there is no visible mold.
Signs of aflatoxin poisoning in a pet could include sluggishness, a loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice or diarrhea.
Midwestern Pet Foods said it was expanding the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

This is a brief look into the elite, competitive world of extreme jogging with your dog. A look at the breeds of dogs in the dog/human teams that run Canicross, or bike, or ski against other teams in variations of CaniCross.
Canicross started as training for sled dogs during the off-season but has rapidly gained popularity as a sport in its own right. Canicross can be run with one or two dogs, always attached to the runner. The runner wears a waist belt with a bungee cord attached to the harness the dog wears. In theory, the dogs pull you to a faster time than you could’ve done yourself.
